The Yorktowne Continues to Give with New York College Partnership
The York County Industrial Development Authority (YCIDA), staffed by YCEA, has partnered with the York College Hospitality Management program to involve students in working on an important project leading up to the Grand Opening of the new Yorktowne.
Working in a supervised Independent Study Program, three students will participate in a very unique learning opportunity in which they will witness how investors, architects, designers, contractors and hotel management professionals work together during the development process and pre-opening stages of a multimillion dollar hotel complex.
“The Yorktowne Hotel has always been a staple of the community, and this is a unique way for it to continue to benefit the community, even while not in operation as a hotel,” states Jack Kay, chair of the YCIDA. “The collaboration with York College is a positive example of town-gown relations that we hope to embellish as the project progresses.”
The Hospitality Management program is managed by Dr. John Hughes, Chair of the Department of Hospitality, Recreation and Sport Management at York College.
“This is a special opportunity for the students, and it is certainly exciting for York College to be part of such a historic project,” says Hughes. “We believe in applying what you learn outside the classroom – that’s the whole nature of this.”
The students include a senior, junior, and sophomore all with varying levels of experience in the hospitality industry. In addition to attending bi-weekly boardroom meetings with the noted stakeholders, students will be assigned the responsibility to work on a project related to the hotel development with responsibility for related deliverables. Moreover, at the conclusion of the semester, students will present their findings and recommendations to the stakeholders for their consideration.
The YCIDA is a governmental entity that champions redevelopment projects within York County. The Board Members of the YCIDA are appointed by the County Commissioners. Projects of note include the creation of three industrial parks, PeoplesBank Park, Marketview Arts and the Harley-Davidson West Campus redevelopment project.
